Athens: Heritage and Modernity
Exploration of the coexistence between
historic and modern Athens.

This program aims to explore the city of Athens and the layers of history left by its passage through time, from a prehistoric settlement to the present modern city, while also investigating how Athenians deal with the special challenges of preserving their extensive cultural heritage, both ancient and more recent.
The aim of this course is to discover both old and new Athens through a series of lectures and visits to monuments, museums and significant city neighborhoods led by the conservators, archeologists, architects and city planners who are involved with the process of creating, studying and preserving the city.
The course is mostly intended for persons studying, or professionally involved in, the fields of: History, Archaeology, Architecture Art History, Architecture, Urban Planning, Anthropology, Conservation and Historic Preservation.
The program aims to introduce the participants to the following subjects:
- History and evolution of the city
- Art and culture of the city over time
- Conservation of the major archaeological monuments
- The modern city and the archaeological areas
- Modern urban development and architecture
Course Structure
Daily lecture in the morning (8:30 am – noon – incl. 20 min. break) followed by visits to museums and archeological sites (2:00 – 6:00 pm).
