The painting workshop involves a series of painting exercises where students learn the use of traditional materials and painting techniques as are prescribed in the “Craftsman’s Handbook” by Cennino Cennini, written in the 15th Century. Students execute the following types of paintings: sgraffito fresco, painted fresco in the renaissance method, tempera painting on wood panel with gesso preparation, gilding on a surface prepared with gesso and bole, and oil painting on canvas. In all exercises students prepare the base coats and mix their paints from traditional pigments and binders.
